A breast implant is prosthesis. The purpose of breast implant is to change the size, shape, and contour of a woman’s breast. The procedure involves inserting breast implants to increase the size of the breasts, change their shape or make them in level. To restore a natural looking breast mound for post–mastectomy breast reconstruction patients or to correct congenital defects and deformities of the chest wall, reconstructive plastic surgery is done. To enhance or enlarge the appearance of the breast through breast augmentation surgery, cosmetic surgery is done.
In general breast implant devices, the filler material used is saline and silicone. During surgery, the saline implant has an elastomer silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution. The silicone implant has an elastomer silicone shell pre-filled with viscous silicone gel.
The tissue expander device is temporary breast prosthesis. It is used to form and establish an implant pocket for the future permanent breast implant and for the reconstruction of a breast. For the correction of male breast defects and deformities and the aesthetic repair of a man’s chest wall, the pectoral implant (breast prosthesis) is used for the reconstruction.
The surgery involves making a cut (incision) in the skin next to or below the breast. Further, the implant is positioned either between your breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind your chest muscle. Then stitching the incision and covering it with a dressing. In 60 - 90 minutes, the surgery is performed.
Factors Influencing Market Growth:
In 2012, World Health Organization (WHO) released data stating, 1.7 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, which has led to approximately 522,000 deaths during the same year.
According to National Cancer Registry, by 2020, there will be approximately 5,000 new cases in Ireland per annum. 40pc of breast cancer patients require mastectomy - the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely. A mastectomy is usually carried out to treat breast cancer. In order to adequately control their disease, 40pc of breast cancer patients require mastectomy.
Increasing incidences of breast cancer is one of the important drivers for breast implants market. Aesthetic appeal will further drive the market. In addition, R&D initiatives and technological advancements are the key factors contributing to the growth of the market. Increase in disposable income is expected to fuel industry demand. However, the risk of developing serious complications and lack of skilled nursing facilities in emerging markets may be the major restraining factor hampering the growth of breast implants market.
The geographical analysis of the market includes major four regions such as North America, Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), and Latin America, Middle East & Africa (LAMEA).
In the Asia Pacific region, growing disposable income and rising incidences of breast cancer is expected to witness the fastest growing breast implants market. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation is one of the top 5 cosmetic procedures conducted in the U.S. The ASPS, further stated that 279,143 number of procedures related to augmentation had taken place in the U.S. Large number of such cases will contribute to the growth of the market in the coming years.
The global Breast Implants market comprises some of the key players such as Allergan Inc. (Actavis), CEREPLAS, Establishment Labs S.A., GC Aesthetics Plc., GROUPE SEBBIN SAS, Ideal Implant Inc., Hans Biomed Ltd, Laboratoires Arion, Mentor Worldwide LLC. (A Johnson & Johnson Company), POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics GmbH, and Sientra, Inc. among others.
In May 2018, a research study was published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The new research confirms reductive augmentation for women who want a higher, rounder breast after reduction surgery. Dr. Jon Mendelsohn who is part of a team that performs breast implant surgery says implants help lift the sagging breast.
Use of silicone is highly synthetic which leads to irritation and infection. The German biotech company AMSilk bioengineered silk coating specifically for medical and cosmetic implants. The scientists believe that it will lead to better outcomes from implant surgeries.
In 2017, Dr. Niamh O’Halloran of The National University of Ireland Galway was awarded the Allergan Innovation Award in 2017 for her work on the use of hydrogels in adipose tissue engineering for breast regeneration. Currently, Dr. Niamh is using her expertise in biomedical research to offer natural implants to women who have undergone a mastectomy.
