Cellulose acetate is a semisynthetic compound and is obtained by acetylation of the plant substance cellulose. Prime two sources of the natural cellulose are wood pulp and cotton linens. The reaction of natural cellulose with acetic anhydride is carried out to produce cellulose acetate, which is available in the form of flakes. It is a high performing thermoplastic polymer which has several adaptable properties such as good resistance to chemicals, high transparency, large impact, aesthetic appeal, high dielectric constant, and mechanical strength. Cellulose acetate is reel into textile fibers called as acetate, rayon or triacetate. Cellulose acetate in primary form cannot be processed as a thermoplastic. Therefore, it can only be processed by dissolving in a solvent and rotating or casting.
Nonetheless, it can be generally processed by normal plastics processing techniques in compounded form. For this purpose, it has to be merged with a suitable combination of plasticizers and additives and melt compounded to get cellulose acetate granules. These granules are then processed by different standard techniques.
Rise in consumption of cigarette in developing countries, surging expansion of apparel and textile industry in Russia, Brazil, India, and China together with various medical applications for the manufacturing of wipes and diapers are the factors collectively contributing to the growth of cellulose acetate market. Technological advancement in applications and large demand from the Asia Pacific region further propels the market growth. Moreover, growth in developing economies such as APAC, the Middle East & Africa, and South America is expected to propel the growth of the market. Additionally, the market consists of various opportunities such as demand for advanced cellulose acetate to reduce exposure to toxicants during smoking and growing export from APAC countries. However, rising awareness regarding health risks associated with smoking can hamper the growth of the market. Moreover, the market has to face various challenges such as volatility of raw material prices and stringent regulations.
Geographically, the market is split into major four regions: North America, Europe, Asia- Pacific, and Latin America, Middle East & Africa. Asia- Pacific cellulose acetate market is flourishing at the rapid pace. The rising use of cellulose acetate in cigarette filters, textiles & apparel, photographic films, and tapes & labels applications is predicted to provide better growth opportunities. Furthermore, the other factors driving the market in this region include huge economic growth, growth in the manufacturing industry, availability of cheap labor, and growing end-use market. The market for cellulose acetate has reached maturity in Europe and North America due to increased awareness associated with the ill effect of smoking in these regions. Because of improving economic conditions, the global market in Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are anticipated to be emerging markets.
Market players are adopting various development strategies such as product launch, partnership, strategic alliances, and collaborations to sustain their position in the market. In 2016 May an international chemical and advanced materials company Solvay agreed to take full charge of U.S. cellulose acetate flake plant. The plant was earlier operating under joint venture partner Eastman Chemical Company and Solvay. Under this agreement, Solvay acquired Eastman’s 50 percent stake and became its sole owner.
